Transportation in Tokyo

  • Train – Electric, color-coded commuter trains operate aboveground via the East Japan Railway Company (JR). The Yamanote Line (green) is the best-known and most convenient JR line, and makes announcements in English. Another convenient JR line is the Chuo Line (orange). Avoid the JR train during weekday mornings from 8am to 9am. If you’re staying in Tokyo for several days, purchase a Suica, a prepaid card that can be used on all modes of Greater Tokyo Area transportation, including JR trains, private railways, subways, and buses. You can also use Suica at vending machines, convenience stores, and fast-food outlets with the Suica sign.
  • Bus - Buses are not as easy to use as trains or subways because destinations and routes are usually in Japanese only. Most bus drivers don’t speak English either. Sometimes, buses are convenient for short trips. You can pay your fare on board using coins, notes, or Suica or Pasmo cards. Toei’s Tokyo Shitamachi Bus is a sightseeing bus that follows a set route to 7 major attractions.
  • Metro - The Tokyo Metro system is efficient, modern, clean, and easy to navigate. All station names are written in English. Many cars display the next station in English and announce stops in English. There are 13 underground, color-coded subway lines operated by two companies: Tokyo Metro and Toei. Before boarding, make sure the subway is going to your destination by checking the signs on the platform of each station. Vending machines at all subway stations sell individual tickets. Most subways run from about 5am to midnight, every 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Taxi – It is very expensive to travel via taxi in Tokyo. Fares are posted on the back of the front passenger seat and can be paid by all major credit cards. From 10pm to 5am, an extra 30% is added to your fare. You can usually hail a taxi from any street or from taxi stands at major hotels. The red light above the dashboard means the taxi is available, whereas a yellow light means the taxi is occupied. Doors open and close automatically, so be careful. Remember to have your destination written in Japanese, in case your driver doesn’t speak English.
  • Bike - Bicycles are common for local transport, but there’s a lack of bicycle lanes, so feel free to ride on the sidewalk. Keep in mind that bicycle travel may not be ideal on hot summer days. Bike rental is not common. Instead, buy a cheap, single-speed bicycle.
  • Boat - Sightseeing boats provide an enjoyable way to see Tokyo. Boats depart from Hinode Pier and travel for approximately 40 minutes to Asakusa via the Sumida River. You can also travel by water bus ferry via the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company along the Sumida River and in Tokyo Bay. The ferries have prerecorded commentary in English and Japanese.
  • Car - Tokyo traffic is intense, and parking is expensive. Unless you are already familiar with Tokyo’s streets, it is best to use the mass transit system instead of renting a car. Car rental is only a good idea for day trips outside Tokyo

Tokyo Travel Safety Tips

  • Tokyo is one of the safest major cities in the world, but travelers should still be aware of their surroundings, and keep their eyes open to any potential dangers.
  • Sexual harassment occurs on crowded trains. Women should seek women-only passenger cars during rush hours.
  • Small police stations are located throughout the city. If you need assistance, feel free to go to them. However, officers are not usually fluent in English, so learn basic Japanese.
  • Beware of pickpockets in crowded areas, trains, and bars popular among tourists.
  • The red light and nightlife districts are sleazy, but usually not dangerous.

Tokyo Airport Tips

  • NRT is the main international hub of Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Nippon Cargo Airlines, as well as an Asian hub for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.
  • NRT has 3 terminals linked by free shuttle buses.
  • Most shops and restaurants at NRT are located on the 4th floor of the Terminal 1 Central Building.
  • The South Wing of NRT includes a duty-free mall called “Narita Nakamise,” the largest of its kind in Japan.
  • NRT Terminal 3 has a 24-hour food court, which is the biggest airport food court in Japan.
  • In Terminals 1 and 2, passengers with wireless LAN compatible devices can use roaming wireless LAN services in the arrivals and departures lobbies and the areas after outbound passport control.
  • Look for several different banks located throughout the terminals for currency exchange, as well as ATMs and credit card service counters.
  • For assistance with buying train or bus tickets or getting a taxi, stop by the ground transportation desks located on the first floor of Terminal 1 in the North and South Wings, and the first floor of Terminal 2.
  • The quickest way to reach Tokyo is by train. Japan Railroad’s Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner serve the airport and take 40 to 90 minutes to reach Tokyo.
  • Train tickets sell out fast, so make reservations early.
  • The airport bus usually departs once an hour, or two to three times an hour during busy times. It stops at major Tokyo hotels and subway stations.
  • Taxi service is available at Terminals 1 and 2 outside the front doors of arrivals.
  • Japan restricts liquids in carry-on baggage, so purchase beverages for your flight after security checks.
