Transportation in Los Angeles

• Metro – The L.A. County Metro Rail runs 6 color-coded lines through the county. Trains usually run from around 4am to midnight, Sunday through Thursday. They extend their service hours on Fridays and Saturdays. You can pay in cash, with a reloadable TAP card, or with a 1-day pass or 7-day pass that offer unlimited rides for a set fee.
• Bus - Over 150 bus lines run through the city. Schedules and routes can be confusing to navigate, especially for visitors. Most buses start running around 5am, but stopping times range from about 9pm to 2am. This depends on the route and the day. Like the Metro, you can pay with cash, a TAP card, or a 1-day pass or 7-day pass.
• Taxi – Getting around by taxi is also an option, but fares are expensive. Most taxis will not stop for you when hailed, so reserve one in advance. You can take a taxi from LAX into the city, but the rate is over $50 one-way.

Los Angeles Travel Safety Tips

• In case of an emergency, dial 911 from any phone.
• Most tourist destinations within the area are safe.
• Avoid dangerous areas in or near downtown. For instance, Pico-Union, Westlake, Boyle Heights, South Central, Compton, Inglewood, Harbor Gateway, and Wilmington.
• Be alert if walking in the San Fernando Valley neighborhoods. Be particularly vigilant around Pacoima, Panorama City, Van Nuys, North Hills, and Canoga Park.
• Stay on high visibility roads and freeways, and use common sense to avoid incidents of road rage.
• Avoid confrontations with groups of young men who could be in gangs. If a dangerous situation arises, flee immediately.
• Most homeless individuals are harmless, and will take no for an answer. Many of them populate Hollywood, Skid Row, and Venice Beach.
• Minor earthquakes happen sometimes, but they’re usually not cause for concern.
• L.A. is known for air pollution. Smog is the worst during the summer and further inland. Yet air quality has improved in recent years.

• LAX handles more direct flights than any other airport in the world. It connects over 80 domestic and approximately 70 international destinations.
• LAX has 9 passenger terminals that are all served by courtesy shuttle buses.
• Nearby airports include ONT (LA/Ontario) and SNA (John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana).
