Current monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, does not live at the palace, but it is still used for royal ceremonies and other events. The palace is in the Banglamphu area of Bangkok, also known as the Old City. All visitors must adhere to a strict dress code upon entering the Grand Palace complex.
  • Wat Phra Kaew – Located on the grounds of the Grand Palace, this Bangkok temple is considered the most sacred Buddhist temple in all of Thailand. Within the temple is the Emerald Buddha, an important religious and political symbol of Thailand. Other attractions in the temple include a model of the Angkor Wat temple, the magnificent Balcony, and impressive murals. You can take a guided tour, or a self-guided audio tour available in English, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish. Remember to dress appropriately when visiting this sacred temple.
  • Wat Arun – Located in the Bangkok Yai district of Bangkok, this Buddhist temple is one of the most stunning temples in the city for its riverside location and unique design. Transportation in Bangkok

  • Train - The Skytrain (BTS) connects to the main shopping, entertainment, and business areas of the city. There are 2 BTS lines. The Silom Line runs west to south, and the Sukhumvit Line runs north to east. The 2 lines meet at Siam Station, and interconnect at 2 stations with the underground MRT. A new BTS train arrives every 3 to 6 minutes or so between 6:30am and midnight. Fares start at 15 baht for one stop. Keep in mind that trains are very crowded during peak morning and evening hours because the BTS is the choice mode of transport for Bangkok residents.
  • Subway – The Mass Rapid Transit network (MRT) is a quick and efficient way to get around Bangkok. It serves 18 stations throughout the city. Trains arrive every 5 minutes during peak hours, and every 7 minutes at other times, and they connect to the BTS Skytrain at 2 stations. The most popular stops for visitors include Kampaengphet, Sukhumvit, Silom, and Hua Lamphong. The Bangkok MRT runs underneath the two main thoroughfares in downtown Bangkok. MRT service hours are 6:00am to midnight.
  • Taxi – Aside from the BTS and MRT, the next best way to get around Bangkok is by taxi. Most taxis are new, spacious, and come in a variety of colors including green, yellow, red, blue, orange, and pink. Taxis are readily available at all times of the day and night, especially near hotels, shopping malls, and other tourist attractions. Expect a long wait when it rains, and during rush hours. The majority of Bangkok taxi drivers speak little English, so it’s a good idea to have the name and location of where you’re going written in Thai. All taxis in Bangkok are now metered. If a driver refuses to use the meter, it’s best to find another taxi. Tipping taxi drivers is not required, but it is common to round the fare off to the nearest 5 or 10 baht.
  • Bus – Bangkok buses are a cheap way to travel across the city. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) provides bus service in Bangkok and nearby provinces, operating over 100 routes with more than 3,000 buses. Be sure to get a BMTA map, available at most bus terminals. If you need assistance, ask a policemen or call the BMTA Hotline. Most buses run from 5:00am to 11:00pm daily. Destinations on the majority of Bangkok buses are written in Thai, so visitors should pay attention to the bus number, the type of bus, and its colors. The EURO II is the newest, most efficient, and spacious bus in Bangkok.
  • Tuk-tuk – A tuk-tuk is basically a rickshaw with a small engine in it. Tuk-tuks are still popular among tourists because riding in one is a unique experience, not a practical way to get around. Tuk-tuks are ideal for short trips. Fares vary, depending on distance, time of day, traffic, and drivers. Fare negotiating and haggling is a must. Beware of the tuk-tuks around tourist areas claiming to know secret attractions, and offering sightseeing tours and unsolicited help. Simply refuse their scams. Avoid taking a tuk-tuk during peak morning and evening rush hours.
  • Boat - Boats provide a great way to get around the popular riverside area with its many historical attractions, temples, and architecture, and also to explore the canals. Express boats, river taxis, and long-tail boats travel up and down the Chao Phraya River. Ferries are a good option for crossing the river. Some of the express boats only stop at the main piers. All of the 5-star hotels along the river offer free shuttle boats that ferry guests to and from their hotel and Sathorn Central Pier. Even if you are not a guest at these hotels, the shuttle service is still available for free. Canal boats travel up and down the largest canals daily every 5 to 20 minutes.
  • Motorbike – If you are by yourself, the fastest way to get around Bangkok is by motorbike taxi, especially during rush hours. However, it can be dangerous because motorbike taxis dart in and out between cars and buses. Motorbike taxi drivers even drive on sidewalks or in the opposing traffic lane to get you to your destination quickly. Motorbike taxi drivers wear numbered orange vests and wait near office buildings and shops, busy roads, and Skytrain and underground stations. Fares vary depending on how far you go. Be sure you negotiate the fare beforehand. Certain routes have a fixed fare. Always wear a safety helmet.
  • Rental Car – You can rent a car in several locations throughout Bangkok, including Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and downtown Bangkok. However, Bangkok is known for its massive traffic jams. Most tourists consider driving in Bangkok a nightmare. We highly recommend that you use public transport instead of driving yourself, unless you are traveling outside the city center to other parts of Thailand.

Travel Safety Tips in Bangkok

  • If you decide to experience Bangkok nightlife, be sure to carry your passport for ID checks.
  • Police sometimes raid bars and nightclubs, forcing all customers to participate in drug tests and searches.
  • Smoking is prohibited in all restaurants, bars, and nightclubs.
  • Beware of motorbikes speeding by and going through red lights. If you rent a bike, make sure you have insurance.
  • Do not take advice from someone on the street who appears to be a friendly local. It could be a scam. Ask your hotel concierge if you need assistance.
  • Never get into a tuk-tuk if a local is urging you to do so. Bangkok locals only approach foreigners if they have an ulterior motive.
  • Be on the lookout for scammers, especially in major tourist areas.
  • If an English-speaking Thai approaches you at a popular tourist attraction and says it is closed or offers you a discount on admission, it is most likely a scam.
  • Insist on the meter for taxis and agree on a price in advance for tuk-tuks.
  • If at any point your transportation brings you somewhere you didn’t want to go, walk away as soon as you can and find other transportation.
  • Never ask a taxi driver for a restaurant recommendation.
  • Avoid private bus companies offering direct trips from Bangkok to other cities via “VIP” buses. There are robberies and scams aboard private buses.
  • The Metropolitan Police speak very limited English, so contact the Tourist Police if you’re in trouble.
  • The hot Bangkok weather makes food go bad quicker. If you’re away from major tourist hotels and resorts, stick to eating boiled, baked, or fried foods.
  • Avoid drinking tap water, even in hotels. Good restaurants serve boiled water, but it’s best to order sealed water bottles instead.
  • Avoid consuming ice because it is most likely made with unpurified tap water.
  • Before opening your door to get out of a taxi, make sure a motorbike isn’t speeding by.
  • Before exiting a taxi, make sure you haven’t left any valuables or shopping bags behind.
  • Once you’re on a bus, keep walking inside. Don’t stand at the door, or block the way in the middle of the bus.
